Memorize is a scarry word and when you mention it is important to memorize some Bible verses most people panic. Most say they cannot do this. I cannot memorize and this is impossible. I usually do not list steps to do something or accomplish something. I am going to for this topic. Three steps to memorize verses:
Step 1 – why can this be accomplished?
Step 2 – what have I done to memorize?
Step 3 – how to memorize?
First step is to look at what you already have memorized. Most of us know the day and time of our favorite TV show, zip code, address, phone number and our friend’s phone number. Depending on our employment we remember all our client’s names, product numbers and employee names. I worked for a time with a manufacturer who made an estimated 60 products with 60 different five-digit product numbers. Within a few months I knew all product descriptions and product numbers. The key word for memorization is repetition.
The second step is as I have read the Bible, I have noted verses sticking out or meaning a lot to me. This is where most of my verses in my devotional books have come from. I note the verse and write on a small card. I review the verse every day for a week or two. I continue to do this. Today my pack has about 120 verses. I can recall them to encourage me, keep me on track with God and recall them to encourage others.
The third step is as you read your Bible, I suggest doing what I do. Make a note of the verse, write the verse and reference on a small card. Over time you will accumulate many verses. This is not a quick process as repetition over time will help you know the verse and reference. This does take time and commitment. This is why the theme in my authored devotionals are ’One Week at a Time”. Dwell and focus on a set of verses and down to one key verse. Really learn the verse and apply to where you are in your walk with God. Repetition is important and helps you memorize the verse. You want quality and the race is not to see how many verses you know but how many can impact your life. Here is one – Psalm 119:11 “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I may not sin against you.” NIV
